RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
