This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
